PORT WASHINGTON, NY, January 9, 1997 -- Even as TDK prepares for the launch later this year of its write-once and rewritable DVD media, the company remains bullish on the future of the CD-R format, which it predicts will maintain double-digit growth rates into the next century. To meet this demand, TDK will increase monthly CD-R production to 5 million pieces by the spring of 1997 -- with a capacity of 4 million units per month at its Chikumagawa plant in Japan and 500,000 pieces per month each at its U.S. and Luxembourg facilities.
Tim Sullivan, TDK VP of Marketing, commented as follows: "Even in the era of DVD, CD-R will continue to be a true universal distribution medium, and its growth will continue to mirror the growth rate in the installed base of CD-ROM and DVD-ROM drives, which are playback-compatible with CD-R. Equally important, the dramatic price reductions in CD-R writers are making CD-R available to a whole new base of desktop PC users. These factors, along with easier CD-R authoring software, point to a continued and very healthy market for the CD-R format."
TDK, one of the pioneers in the CD-R market, offers CD-R media in two recording capacities (650 MB and 550 MB) and five different surface finishes for custom labeling applications. TDK CD-R media are optimized for use in all types and speeds of CD-R writers -- normal speed, 2X, 4X and 6X.
